‘Learn to Love, Love to Learn’

SMSC and British Values

The Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural development of our children is at the heart of our Mission Statement. St Bede’s provides a caring, Catholic education for all our children. This policy underpins the principles and opportunities for Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural development based on the Gospel Values which permeate all aspects of school life, so that the children will:

“Journey together so that all might have life; life in all its fullness”. John 10:10

MISSION STATEMENT

At St. Bede’s Catholic Infant School it is the mission of the whole school community to nurture a loving, safe, caring, supportive, quality environment in which the individual has the opportunity to develop intellectually, spiritually, morally, socially and emotionally in an atmosphere of trust and mutual respect.

BRITISH VALUES

At St. Bede's Infant School, we value and respect the diverse backgroud of our School community, adapting and tailoring our curriculum to meet the requirements of British Values. We organise and participate in many events throughout the year where British Values are at the core.

Democracy:

We have an active School Council who meet every half-term to discuss and debate!

The Rule of Law:

Through our SCARF PSHE scheme, children learn about The Rule of Law. We also have close links with our local Member of Parliament who we correspond with throughout the year. Children also have visits from other authorities and members of our community demonstrate aspects of The Rule of Law.

Individual Liberty:

Pupils at St. Bede's Infants are encouraged to make decisions about their own learning and reflect on those choices. Children take part in various exercises where individual liberty has opportunities, challenges and consequence such as their work in PSHE, E Safety and Collective Worship.

Mutual Respect:

We regularly discuss 'Respect' with children through assemblies, Collective Worships, PSHE and Come and See programmes of study alongside our behaviour policy. Our excellent standards of behaviour demonstrate that mutual understanding.

Tolerance of those of Different Faiths and Beliefs:

Through a range of diverse texts in English and history and the study of other faiths as part of the 'Come and See' programme of study for Religious Education, children are taught to be tolerant of other faiths and beliefs. Through discussion in assemblies and Collective Worships, children explore the diverse world they are part of.

British Value Statement:

All schools are required to actively promote the fundamental values which define British society, the values associated with democracy, the rule of law, individual livery, mutual respect and tolerance of different faiths and beliefs. As a Catholic school, we strongly support and foster universal values, virtues and ethics that shape our children's character and moral perspective. Gospel values permeate every aspect of our daily life in school as set out in our Mission Statement.
